Sadly,
I had to give up on my blog, but I'm finding many of my students are enjoying the use of wikis. Good to see someone carrying on.

Mr. Stein,

You are off to a rousing start! Congratulations to you and the class of 2010. Your students are entering an exciting arena. May all of you grow as life-long learners and have fun in the process.

I am borrowing your "Thoughts for Consideration" and posting them on <a href="http://stgeorgesenglish.com" rel="nofollow">The Hawks Talk</a>, our class blog, and providing a link back to this blog.

Cheers,

Mr. A. Powell

Greg,

You've been tagged. I did not think you would mind being a part of the <a>"8 Random Facts"</a>meme. I chose to participate as a celebration of summer. I did not think you would mind.

G-money,
I enjoyed reading your essay. You are going in the right direction and further along the path than most. You hit the nail on the head with your comments on lack of resources and support. We now know what we want to do and can do, we are committed to "flattening" our curriculum, we just need a minimum level of equipment and support to do it. I think its not about "building" it, we have to "write" it - grants / proposals - to get the stuff we need. Should we have to do this extra work?, no - but the money is out there. I really think your a great teacher, keep up the good work. Keep in touch, it would be great to get some of that cross-district collaboration going on this year. Also, I have a PCR machine I can lend you. (Its my baby, but I know it will be for a good cause)
Take care,

Trust me, your LoTi score will definitely rise. The whole idea about webquests have to do with the instructor's preference. Students in my class last year had the same struggles. I view a webquest as a great jumping off point for a project. Students, however, are only consuming content (Web 1.0). Having them blog or produce a podcast about their discoveries and post facts in a wiki or protopage turns students in to content creators (Web 2.0). This is how our instructor views webquests vs. read/write web tools. I needed a few months after the class ended last summer to begin to understand the differences. I read other blogs. Checked out some wikis and read ed tech magazines. These things help shape my perspective. Now I am going further. I am using tools such as Technorati, del.icio.us, Flickr, Bloglines, Google Reader, and coCommenter to get me comfortable with tagging, RSS feeds and social bookmarking. I missed the class on building folksonomies last year and it cost me. Visiting your class for two or the 10 days it was in session, and participating on your class blog and wiki helped me grow as a teacher. You will grow as well.

Keep the conversations going with this blog. It looks great. I see that you have changed this blog into a class blog. I am curious how you managed to keep your welcome page as a home page. I bet it is a button in the option on the admin side.

Yo, G, I agree with you - this is like "a run through the jungle." We have covered so much, and the pressure is on to use it or lose it. Have you tried any of the apps that we have learned about to use as a central space/homebase for the tools you want to use? I have been tinkering with the protopage website, but am not convinced its as all purpose as what I'm looking for. I really want something that will allow you to: 1- upload office files, 2- host podcasts and videocasts, 3- host your blog, 4-organize admin: calender/reminders, and 5- have a space for links and urls. Take care.

I was as surprised as you when I heard about the i-pod being used so positively in the classroom. I always see my students using their i-pods and cell phones, but didn't realize how valuable they can be. Since I teach students that are at a lower ability level, I was thinking of how useful recording notes on what was done in class and homework would be. It was good to start the rubric today in class. I am slowly understanding what needs to go into our project. It was helpful to see the various samples shared in class today. The "visitor" that came in was an interesting "off track" distraction. Standardized testing is always a hot topic with teachers. Most don't like it or agree with it. It puts a lot of stress on both teacher and student. Since Delaware state standards don't completely match national standards, is what we're testing them really valid? Great job on your blog! :)
